Sinossi
This catalogue presents no masks. The Real Reality Beyond the Social Filters, a contemporary art exhibition organized by the cultural association Biennale Spaces and curated by Michele Citro. The exhibition was part of the Carnival of Castello in Venice. From January 24 to April 15, 2025, over 30 medium- and large-scale works were displayed at Biennale Spaces | Il Giardino Bianco, located at Via Garibaldi 1814. These works unveiled the deeply authentic “masks” that individuals unconsciously wear in daily life — only to playfully and joyfully shed during Carnival, a celebration of ontological freedom and individual expression, liberated from social filters, prejudices, and pressures.
Michele Citro , is a curator, philosopher, and editor whose work bridges aesthetics, political thought, and contemporary media. He holds a master’s degree in the Philosophy of Knowledge from La Sapienza University in Rome, with research experience at La Sorbonne, Harvard, and EHESS. His publications — including Reflecting on Democracy Historically through Marcel Gauchet (2014) and Freedom: Between Man and Citizen (2015) — demonstrate his deep engagement with sociopolitical theory. As president of Paguro Edizioni and a professor at IUDAV-VHEI, Citro integrates art, technology, and marketing. His editorial projects, from Contemporary Futurisms (2024) to ONYRIA: Surrealism of Ordinary Contemporaneity (2023), explore art’s evolving role in society. He has curated major exhibitions at Villa Valmarana, Palazzo Donà dalle Rose, and Venice Design Week, alongside innovative social initiatives such as Raffaello Visits the Prisons of Salerno (2023), which transformed carceral spaces into cultural sites. In 2024, in collaboration with Biennale Spaces A.C., he launched two contemporary art spaces — C96 and SA992 — in Venice’s Biennale district, furthering his commitment to expanding artistic discourse. His curatorial vision positions art as a tool for critical reflection and societal transformation.
